Cult TV Portraits

Portraits of popular fictional teachers from cult TV shows, rendered in eye-catching black & white sketches.

Client: AEU News (Membership magazine, circulation: 50, 000)

Year: 2019

Medium: Ink. (Specifically, my favourite pen of all time, the Uniball Eye Micro, with some added brush & ink).

The process

Context: Pop culture writer, Ben Pobjie, penned an article discussing his favourite fictional teachers from cult TV shows.

Collaborators: Commissioned by Rachel Power, AEU News editor.

Brief: I was asked to create portraits with clean and crisp pen and ink, that would be immediately recognisable and attract readers to the article.

Approach: I sketched in ink while watching video clips of each character from their respective TV show.

Results: I often find likeness easier to draw from a moving image or live model than from photos and stills. I chose the best drawing of each based on likeness, but also based on the resulting visual interest from compositional elements: line, tone, texture and, most importantly: energy.
