The process

Context: I take on private commissions around my commercial and personal work.

Collaborators: My clients for these works have included those who want to remember a house (or landscape) that is dear to them. It may have been their grandparents’ house, their own first home, a share-house where a loved one was first met…I get all kinds of requests! These also make great presents, but be sure to leave me enough time!

Approach: In order to complete a house portrait, I need good reference imagery. Best is if I can attend the property myself, but for those further afield, I can also advise on getting a good photo for me to work from.

Once I have my reference material, I work up the drawing with faint ink, then bolder washes, before adding in thin layers of watercolour paint.

Depending on my current workload, I can complete one within a fortnight.

To request a commission: I complete commissions as works on paper that can be sent anywhere in the world.

Cost is affected by choosing different paper sizes and choosing between colour or black & white.

I’m always interested in discussing new commission works. For house portraits, check out my purpose built website over at Postcard Facade.

A house portrait in progress

I often upload time lapse videos to instagram of work in progress. This is the ink wash underlayer for one of the house portraits on this page.

The brown tape stops the paper from buckling when wet, and the mahlstick stops my hand from smudging wet paint.
